Effortless huge imagery processing in the Cloud - The case of the Image Processing Service (IPS)

André Lage Freitas
LaCCAN - Laboratório de Computação Científica e Análise Numérica - Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL) - Brazil

Cloud computing technologies provide on-demand services for computing and storing a huge amount of data. Nevertheless, using these services implies handling low-level operational details such as creating, starting, stopping virtual instances in addition to dealing with data storage issues. In this talk, I'll present some current challenges and the Image Processing Service (IPS) which enables the processing of huge data sets by using cloud computing through an easy user interface. We validated the preliminary version of IPS by processing gigabytes of fully Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) data sets in the Microsoft Azure Cloud. The evaluation uses actual PolSAR data collected from the NASA Unmanned Aerial Vehicle SAR (UAVSAR) Project. The methodology employed is fully reproducible and relies on Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS).

New Techniques and Tools for Online Spatial Data Visualization and Analytics

Duncan Smith
Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London (UCL), UK

With greater availability of open data and significantly improving web technologies, there are increasingly opportunities for sharing interactive spatial data visualization and analytics online. Recent tools include powerful WebGL graphics libraries, and improving database and analytics software. What then are the advantages and disadvantages of online spatial data visualization over more standard desktop processes? When does it make sense to share spatial data visualization and analysis with wider audiences? This talk will explore these questions with a series of online examples, including exploratory visualization applications of very large spatial datasets; micro-urban analysis for crowdsourcing spatial data; and data narrative examples for improved public engagement. These are all cases where the particular advantages of sharing spatial data visualization comes to the fore.
